Pediatric BLS Two Rescuer Algorithm - Updated 2018

This algorithm outlines what do to if there are two rescuers in an emergency, life saving situion. Just as with the one responder algorithm, if there is more than one responder on scene for a potential cardiac arrest child/infant victim, make sure to first check for responder safety and the safety of the victim. Two-Rescuer BLS Sequence

If there is more than one responder on scene for a potential cardiac arrest child/infant victim, make sure to first check for responder safety and the safety of the victim. You want to ensure the setting is right to begin the BLS Assessment.

STEP EXPLANATION
1: Check Responsiveness

When intervening with a patient who appears to be unresponsive, the first action is to tap the patient and ask loudly "Are you alright?"

Obviously, an infant or young child will not respond to your question. However, look for facial cues to identify a reaction from the victim.

2: Activate the Emergency Response System and retrieve the AED (Automated External Defibrillator)

If the victim is unresponsive, the first responder should remain within the victim and resumes BLS sequence while the second responder activates emergency response system and retrieves the AED or defibrillator.

3: Circulation and Breathing

Check the pulse (5-10 seconds)

  • Infant: Pulse check using the brachial pulse.

  • Child: Pulse check using the carotid or femoral pulse.

While checking the pulse, simultaneously check the patient for absent or abnormal breathing (gasping) by observing the patient's chest for 5-10 seconds.

  • If there is abnormal breathing but there is a pulse, then begin only rescue breathing:

  • If no pulse within 10 seconds, begin CPR.
